The Mecca for Technical Communication

The Mecca for Technical CommunicationAs every year, from Tuesday 23 to Thursday 25 October, Wiesbaden Germany will be the place to be for anyone who earns a living in technical communication. The tekom Jahrestagung / tcworld conference and the associated expo have been the mecca for technical communication for years. The organizers are expecting 3,500 participants. No less than 180 exhibitors will have a stand on the expo (tekom trade fair). The entire three-day program can be consulted through the link below.

At this event there will also be a number of Belgians presenting themselves to the world: Yamagata Europe (Ghent) and CrossLang (Ghent) at the conference, Telelingua International (Brussels), Information Mapping International (Ghent) and 4.ST Belgium (Leuven) on the tekom trade fair.

On the basis of two case studies Tiene Vertriest and Eef Blommaart from Yamagata Europe will show how they integrated Machine Translation at Honda Motor Europe in Customer Support and Repair Centers. The first case concerns a semi-automated translation system for communication on warranty claims and the second case is a fully automated multilingual instant messaging system for dealers who need technical support in difficult repairs. The title of their presentation is: 'Snapshot of Machine Translation: Knowledge Base and Real-Time Chat'.

Nathalie De Sutter of CrossLang will hold a presentation with the title 'A (terminology) service layer for Moses SMT'. Moses is a machine translation system based on statistics (SMT = Statistical Machine Translation). It's an open source system. In her presentation Nathalie De Sutter will show how Moses can also be deployed in companies and in a real translation and localization environments, terminology management included.

On the tekom study trade fair Rigo Vangheel and Dimitri Tetsch from 4.ST Leuven (Services Systems Software Support Technologies) again presented the HelpServer. HelpServer is a web and server-based platform for writing teams. The platform provides a secure desktop-like environment where various technical editors can work together in real-time collaboration. For this they use a Word-like editor. The content they create, is stored as XML in a database that is located on a server (intranet/extranet). Content that is ready for use can be published directly (= made accessible in real time via a web portal) or be exported to popular file types.

At the stand of Information Mapping International (Ghent) Tom Van der Vennet introduces Information Mapping, the well-known method to analyze, structure and clearly and coherently present information. Since 2009 Information Mapping is under the ownership of Francis Declercq (U&I Learning) and some partners.

At their stand Telelingua International and Foxiz (since the beginning of this year their exclusive sales partner in The Netherlands) will be presenting SmartDocs and more. SmartDocs is a platform for content management and reuse with Microsoft Word for writing teams, a creation of ThirtySix Software (USA), a company which, in turn, has a partnership with Foxiz.
