Are you joining the fun during Poetry Week?

Are you joining the fun during Poetry Week?Since last year, Poetry Day has become a Poetry Week. This year from today, the 30th of January, until Wednesday next week, February 5th.

The theme for this year is amazement, and the activities and events - poetry prizes, author lectures, poetry classes, publications and performances - extend to the corners of Flanders and The Netherlands. Schools, libraries, bookshops and many literary organisations are leading the way for poetry.

And you? Are you joining in on the fun? In any case, the trainees of TheLanguageIndustry are. They have hijacked the Facebookpage of TheLanguageIndustry and are making each day of the poetry week a poetry day.

On the agenda of poezieweek.com, there are currently 146 activities planned in Flanders. A (somewhat quirky) selection of activities:

Rhyme and poetry in Herzele

In the East-Flemish Herzele, the local bards attracted the full attention of the weekly market on Wednesday. In exchange for a bowl of alphabet soup they read their favourite poems aloud in a cosy caravan. The local wereldomroep supplies Radio Star took it all in and sent the live.

Also in Herzele, two Herzele poets, Carla Cosyns and Patricia De Corte, welcom any and all poetry enthusiasts to their poetry cave, to enjoy poetry in all intimacy with a bite to eat and a drink.

Browsing in Brussels

In the library of Laken (Brussels) poetry enthusiasts can continue the library poem or browse through the poetry exhibition in silence.

Plantin - Poetic in Antwerp

The Plantin-Moretus Museum In Antwerp has to make room tonight for You On Stage, a young group with the musical accompaniment of The Fistwhistle Quintet.

Antwerp prisoners let themselves be inspired by the theme 'amazement' to write their poems. The five most amazing poems received a cantine coupon for ten euros. The winning poem 'I wonder' was printed on postcards that can be sent from prison. The other poems shine in the prison library and in the Permeke library.

No poetry week without city poets of course. In Antwerp, that is Bernard Dewulf. He chose 19 poems from dead poets who are resting on the Schoonselhof cemetery, which will now also decorate the cemetery.

Sounds from the Kempen

In Kalmthout, the link between poetry and nature. The result: a rejuvenating, wintery poetry promenade, sealed with a reading session by Bie Wouters from her bundle 'Silence is made of snow'.

K. Schippers

And no Poetry Day or Poetry Week without a poetry gift. This year, the gift comes from K. Schippers. You will receive your gift after you spend at least 12.5 euro on poetry in the bookstore. K. Schippers will also be present during the closing of Poetry Day in the Arenbergschouwburg in Antwerp, tonight. There, the Herman Koninck prize will be awarded for the best volume of poetry and the best debut of the year.

The Poetry Week is a Dutch-flemish cooperation of Poëzieclub, Poetry International, Stichting Lezen Vlaanderen, Stichtig Lezen Nederland, Wintertuin, Poëziecentrum, Boek.be and Stichting CPNB (Collective Propaganda of the Dutch Book).

And you? Are you joining us for Poetry Week?
